Chris Carthy
An accredited Community Led Homes adviser
Counties: All of England
Biography: I am an experienced advisor and project manager supporting community-led housing initiatives at all stages of their journey. My background is in architecture and planning, and I have worked for several years in the affordable housing development sector. I have worked with a range of CLTs, co-housing groups and self-build projects to assist in establishing themselves, planning out projects, securing land, becoming investment ready, creating partnerships with housing providers and – crucially – to put in place solid foundations to successfully deliver new kinds of projects.
My work is most often in London, the south-west and north-west, but I work across England. A brief summary of my current and recent experience is:
- I am currently development manager for RUSS Community Land Trust’s first project for 33 new affordable, partly self-built homes in south London, a role which I have undertaken since 2017, including securing planning, £1m in grant funding, £7m in bank lending, the site lease and finding the right building contractor.
I currently advise St Ann’s Redevelopment Trust (StART), a CLT working to maximise affordable housing and community benefits on a major locally important site in north London
Governance and financial viability support to Fishponds Co-Build for their 20-home new-build project and community space in inner city Bristol
Supporting Manchester Urban Co-housing (MUCH) to establish a partnership agreement with a major regional housing association
Facilitating Ambition Lawrence Weston, a neighbourhood forum in Bristol, with a feasibility study for council-owned land and their process to select an architect
Supporting Surrey Community Action with learning towards a fledgling self-build project in Guildford.
In my spare time I am a volunteer trustee for Forest CLT, a recently established Community Land Trust near my home in east London.
